The 2023 Global Citizen Festival in Central Park, New York City, was not just another event; it was a monumental gathering that united 60,000 Global Citizens, artists, and advocates. The festival was broadcast live to audiences worldwide, marking a year of campaigning to drive advocacy toward major commitments across equity, education, the planet, food, and jobs.
With a star-studded lineup featuring Red Hot Chili Peppers, Ms. Lauryn Hill, and many more, the festival is more than just a musical extravaganza—it's a call to action to end extreme poverty, and technology plays a pivotal role in amplifying this call. L+R is proud to have been part of this journey since 2015, contributing to the organization's mission through design transformation and advanced mobile technologies.
L+R and Global Citizen: A Collaboration Rooted in Impact
Our collaboration with Global Citizen began with a focus on developing their mobile app, which has since become a hub for digital activism. The app allows users to stay informed, take action on pressing global issues, and earn points redeemable for festival tickets. It's a prime example of how UX/UI design and digital product development can be leveraged to drive social change, particularly for non-profit organizations. The festival secured a historic number of commitments and announcements in support of ending extreme poverty. Notable pledges included $240 million for the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and 900,000 hectares of protected land in the Brazilian Amazon. The festival also marked a year of dedicated Global Citizen action and campaigning across gender equity, girls' education, and access to sexual and reproductive health care for women and girls.

The Role of Mobile Technologies
Mobile technologies have been a cornerstone in engaging Global Citizens around the world. L+R's role in developing intuitive and user-friendly mobile applications has made it easier for people to take actions like signing petitions, sharing content, and participating in virtual events. These digital platforms have been crucial in reaching milestones, such as the 3.3 million actions taken by Global Citizens leading up to the festival—the highest number for a New York festival in over a decade.
Digital activism goes beyond clicks and shares; it's about creating real-world impact. The festival led to a total of $470 million in commitments as a result of the campaign. This is a testament to the power of combining advanced mobile technologies with passionate activism.
Looking Ahead
As we reflect on the success of the 2023 Global Citizen Festival, we are reminded of the ongoing work that lies ahead. L+R will continue to collaborate with Global Citizen to innovate in the realm of mobile technologies, aiming to further the reach and impact of digital activism. Together, we are more than just spectators; we are agents of change, working to end extreme poverty and create a more equitable world.
