On September 28, 2024, the Global Citizen Festival returned to Central Park, New York City, uniting 60,000 attendees for a powerful day of music, advocacy, and global action. Headlined by artists like Post Malone and Doja Cat, the event saw world leaders, activists, and citizens join forces to tackle extreme poverty and climate change.

This year’s festival was a landmark event, with $1 billion in commitments announced, targeting issues such as protecting the Amazon, supporting a global Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty, and funding for the World Bank's International Development Association (IDA).

As in previous years (since 2015!), L+R was proud to collaborate with Guy Kirkpatrick, Global Citizen's Director of Digital Product and Analytics, and his team to drive impactful digital engagement through the 2x Webby Award-winning Global Citizen app. This tool continues to empower millions of people to take meaningful action on key global issues.

It was especially exciting to see the culmination of the Global Gamers Challenge, which launched earlier this year in partnership with Google Flutter and Global Citizen. The challenge encouraged developers to create games promoting environmental sustainability, with winners in attendance at the festival, sharing their innovative solutions to real-world problems. This collaboration represents the power of digital tools to inspire impactful change.

Global Citizen's 2024 campaign led to 3.4 million actions from participants worldwide, driving real change. Key announcements included:

  • Commitments from Brazil and Colombia to protect biodiversity and halt fossil fuel expansion.
  • Over $500 million for vaccination and humanitarian aid.
  • The UK, Denmark, and Spain increasing contributions to the IDA, pushing towards its $120 billion funding goal.

The festival also marked a shift towards more sustainable events, with the main stage powered by clean energy and initiatives to reduce the carbon footprint.

This ongoing campaign is about more than just one day; it’s a call to action for all citizens to continue the fight for equity, climate action, and the end of extreme poverty. Together, we can keep the momentum going.
