L+R is proud to announce that we are now members of the XR Guild, a community committed to ethical practices in the rapidly evolving fields of Spatial Computing, XR (Extended Reality), and AI. As an organization at the forefront of design and technology, L+R’s commitment to responsible development aligns seamlessly with the core principles of the XR Guild.
XR encompasses all immersive technologies, including Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), and Mixed Reality (MR). Spatial Computing refers to the technology that enables interaction with digital and physical spaces, blending them seamlessly. These fields are revolutionizing how we interact with the world and form the foundation of our work in creating meaningful digital experiences.

The XR Guild is a volunteer-run collective of professionals from various disciplines, including designers, engineers, scientists, and project managers, all working to ensure that technological advancements serve humanity’s best interests. Their mission is to foster a culture of ethical product development through networking, knowledge sharing, mentoring, and advocacy. This initiative resonates deeply with L+R's vision of creating utility through technology that enhances the human experience without compromising core values.
As part of our membership, L+R is committed to upholding the XR Guild’s 12 guiding principles:
- Every person matters
Full fairness and accessibility must be ensured, with special attention to at-risk adults and young, developing minds. - Freedom requires mutual tolerance and respect
Guild members commit to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, rejecting all forms of harassment. - Freedom and privacy are inseparable human rights
Technologies should protect individual freedoms, with an emphasis on informed consent and data security. - We seek to teach what we know and increase dialogue, understanding, and learning
Members support ethical principles even when their organizations do not, advocating with a unified voice. - Metaverse/XR hardware and software are for everyone
These technologies should be accessible and usable by all, with special consideration for vulnerable groups. - No individual, company, or country should own or control the Metaverse
Standards should be open to all, with related intellectual property ideally licensed freely. - The Metaverse and XR should move towards being interoperable, open, and extensible
Any device should be able to work with any content, promoting an open digital ecosystem. - Metaverse/XR hardware and software should benefit end-users and their communities
Privacy and data security are paramount, with a rejection of coercive contracts and a focus on better consent models. - We are responsible for our individual decisions and collectively for the field
Ethical decision-making is crucial, driven by empathy, curiosity, and diligence. - Design patterns that trick, confuse, or exploit people should be exposed and redesigned for safety
Harmful design patterns must be identified and corrected to prevent social exploitation and psychological harm. - We have a duty to help mitigate serious problems wherever possible
Members must address serious issues, including violations of law or human rights, particularly concerning vulnerable populations. - All Guild members adhere to these principles
A commitment to these principles ensures the ethical development of technology in the Metaverse and XR fields.
